Customer service representative salary, and the full cost of one hire
Direct answer
The median customer service representative salary in the US was $44,770 a year, or $21.53 an hour, in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The lowest-paid 10% earned under $31,750 ($15.27 an hour) and the top 10% earned over $63,590 ($30.57 an hour). For an employer, benefits and payroll costs push a median full-time hire to roughly $57,700 a year in total compensation.
Customer service representative pay by percentile
These figures come from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) survey for occupation 43-4051, Customer Service Representatives, May 2025 national estimates. (BLS OEWS 43-4051)
| Percentile | Annual | Hourly |
|---|---|---|
| 10th | $31,750 | $15.27 |
| Median | $44,770 | $21.53 |
| 90th | $63,590 | $30.57 |
It is a big occupation. BLS counted 2,595,750 customer service representatives employed nationally in May 2025.
One detail matters when you read these numbers. OEWS wages are straight-time gross pay. They include base pay, commissions, production bonuses, incentive pay, and tips. They leave out overtime, shift differentials, holiday bonuses, and employer-paid benefits. (BLS OEWS FAQ) So a rep who works a lot of overtime or night shifts can take home more than these figures show.
If you're applying for customer service jobs
The gap between $31,750 and $63,590 is mostly explained by what the job asks of you.
- Industry. Reps who handle insurance, finance, utilities, or technical products usually earn more than reps handling general retail questions, because mistakes cost more and the training takes longer.
- Channel mix. Phone-heavy roles and email or chat roles are paid differently from one employer to the next. Ask how the work splits before you compare offers.
- Shift. Overtime and shift differentials are real money and they aren't in the BLS figures above. Ask what they are.
- Path up. Team lead, quality analyst, and customer success roles are the usual next steps. Writing clearly, handling upset customers well, and knowing the product deeply are what get people promoted.
- Benefits. An offer at $20 an hour with health coverage and a retirement match can be worth more than one at $22 without them. The next section shows how big that difference usually is.
What a customer service rep costs an employer
The BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation (ECEC) survey for June 2026, released September 9, 2026, reported that private-industry employers spent $46.89 per hour worked on total compensation: $32.82 in wages and $14.07 in benefits, of which $3.54 was paid leave. (BLS ECEC news release)
ECEC counts paid leave as a benefit, but OEWS annual wages already pay for vacation and holiday hours. So we add only the other benefit costs: supplemental pay, insurance, retirement, and legally required costs like Social Security, Medicare, and unemployment insurance. Those came to $10.53 an hour, or about 29% of wages plus paid leave ($36.36 an hour).
The table below applies that 29% to the median rep's wage. The benefits row is our estimate. ECEC's figure is an average for all private-industry workers, and lower-wage roles often carry a different mix, so treat it as a starting point and swap in your own benefits costs.
| Line item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Median annual wage (BLS OEWS, May 2025) | $44,770 |
| Benefits and payroll costs (estimate: 29% of wage, BLS ECEC June 2026, all private industry, excluding paid leave) | ~$12,970 |
| Total compensation (estimate) | ~$57,740 |
| Per month (estimate) | ~$4,810 |
| Hourly, 2,080 paid hours (estimate) | ~$27.76 |
What's still missing from that number:
- Seats and tools. Help desk, phone system, CRM, and a computer for each rep.
- Supervision. Someone reviews tickets, handles escalations, and covers time off.
- Hiring and training. New reps need time to learn the product, the policies, and the tone before they're working on their own.
- Coverage. A full-time rep covers about 40 hours a week. If your customers write in at night or on weekends, one hire does not cover that, and two or three hires multiply every line above.
What AI can handle, and what needs a person
Support work is a mix of repeat questions, lookups, follow-ups, and a smaller number of conversations that need judgment. Software is useful on the first three.
TeamShift's Support worker sorts incoming mail in Gmail or Outlook, drafts replies, and prepares follow-ups to missed calls and texts for your OK. It can also answer live calls on your business line with an AI voice that says it's an AI assistant, answers from a brief you write, and takes the caller's details. Refunds, bookings, and other changes asked for on a call come to you to approve. It doesn't transfer calls, so if callers often need a person right away, keep people on the phones or look at a human answering service (we compare the options in AI receptionist vs answering service).
Every reply to a customer is drafted for your OK and goes out only after you approve it. Every step is recorded, so you can see what was drafted, what you approved, and why. Support can draw on a live picture of where each customer, job, quote, and invoice stands, so "where's my order" and "did you get my payment" questions can be answered from your own records instead of a guess.
| Support task | Software can do the first pass | Needs a person |
|---|---|---|
| Sorting the inbox and spotting what's urgent | Yes | Spot checks |
| Drafting answers to repeat questions | Yes, for your approval | Approving what goes out |
| Looking up order, job, or invoice status | Yes | Fixing records that are wrong |
| Following up on threads nobody answered | Yes, drafted for approval | Approving what goes out |
| Routine live phone calls | Yes, AI answers and takes details | Approving changes and hard calls |
| Refunds, exceptions, and policy calls | Can prepare the facts | Yes, the decision |
| An angry customer who wants a human | Flags it | Yes |
For a small business with one person doing support between other jobs, the realistic outcome is that the inbox triage and first drafts come off that person's plate, and they spend their time on approvals, phone calls, and the hard conversations. For a business with heavy live-call volume, AI can take the routine calls, but you still need people for the calls that need judgment.
Pricing for TeamShift is usage-based: creating a workspace is free, work is billed at 3x its compute cost with a maximum quoted before it starts, and you can set daily and monthly spend caps. There are no seats. (pricing)
FAQ
What is the average customer service representative salary?
BLS reports a median of $44,770 a year ($21.53 an hour) for customer service representatives in May 2025. The 10th percentile was $31,750 and the 90th was $63,590.
How much does a customer service rep make per hour?
The median hourly wage was $21.53 in May 2025, with the lowest 10% under $15.27 and the top 10% above $30.57. Overtime and shift differentials are not included in those figures.
How much does it cost a business to employ a customer service rep?
Adding the BLS ECEC private-industry benefit cost excluding paid leave (about 29% of wages plus paid leave, June 2026) to the median wage gives about $57,740 a year in total compensation. Tools, supervision, and hiring costs are extra.
Can AI replace customer service representatives?
It can take a lot of email triage, lookups, and first drafts. It should not decide refunds, exceptions, or how to handle an upset customer. TeamShift Support drafts replies for your approval, and on live calls it takes details and routes any change to you instead of deciding it.
What skills raise customer service pay?
Product depth in a technical or regulated industry, clear writing, and handling escalations well. Those are also the parts of the job that software handles worst, so they hold their value.
