Sales development representative salary, and what an SDR really costs

Direct answer

A sales development representative salary in the US is about $52,000 in base pay at the median, according to Payscale (840 salary profiles, updated May 29, 2026), with commission adding roughly $5,000 to $28,000 and total pay ranging from $45,000 to $82,000. The closest federal benchmark, BLS wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives, had a median of $72,080 ($34.65 an hour) in May 2025, a figure that includes commissions. For an employer, a median SDR costs roughly $67,000 a year in total compensation once benefits are added, before commission.

Why SDR pay is hard to pin down

The Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't have an occupation called "sales development representative." In its Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) survey, people who qualify leads and book meetings are counted inside broader sales codes. So we used two sources and labeled each one.

  • Payscale, Sales Development Representative (SDR). Self-reported pay for the actual job title. It's survey data, not a government statistic, but it reflects what SDRs say they earn. (Payscale SDR salary)
  • BLS OEWS 41-4012, Sales representatives, wholesale and manufacturing, except technical and scientific products. Our main federal proxy. It covers B2B sellers who prospect and qualify buyers for a company's products. (BLS OEWS 41-4012)
  • BLS OEWS 41-3091, Sales representatives of services (except advertising, insurance, financial services, and travel). A second proxy, closer for SDRs who sell services or software. (BLS OEWS 41-3091)

The BLS codes include experienced account executives who carry a full quota, which is why their medians sit well above Payscale's SDR figure. Read Payscale as "what an SDR makes" and BLS as "where B2B sales pay goes as you move up."

SDR salary by percentile

Source (reference period) 10th percentile Median 90th percentile
Payscale SDR, base salary (May 2026) $40,000 $52,000 $67,000
BLS 41-4012 wholesale/manufacturing reps (May 2025) $39,090 ($18.79/hr) $72,080 ($34.65/hr) $137,550 ($66.13/hr)
BLS 41-3091 services sales reps (May 2025) $37,980 ($18.26/hr) $69,990 ($33.65/hr) $148,840 ($71.56/hr)

Payscale puts average SDR base salary at $51,677. Its ranges for the other parts of pay are commission $5,000 to $28,000, bonus $2,000 to $25,000, and total pay $45,000 to $82,000.

How the BLS numbers treat commission matters. OEWS wages include base pay, commissions, and production bonuses, but not overtime, holiday bonuses, or non-production bonuses. (BLS OEWS FAQ) So the BLS medians already include commission, while Payscale's $52,000 is base only.

BLS counted 1,238,190 people in 41-4012 and 1,256,010 in 41-3091 in May 2025.

If you're an SDR or trying to become one

  • Ask for the split. Offers are usually quoted as on-target earnings (base plus commission at 100% of quota). Ask what share of current SDRs actually hit quota. A high OTE that few people reach is worth less than a lower one most people reach.
  • Know what you're paid on. Meetings booked, meetings held, or pipeline that turns into closed deals all pay out differently. Meetings held is usually the fairest to the rep.
  • Plan the next step. The SDR job is commonly an entry point to account executive roles, which is where the higher BLS percentiles live. Ask how long the typical promotion takes and how many SDRs made it last year.
  • Bring proof. Your conversion rate from first reply to booked meeting says more about you than call volume.

What an SDR costs an employer

The BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation (ECEC) survey for June 2026, released September 9, 2026, reported that private-industry employers spent $46.89 per hour worked on total compensation: $32.82 in wages and $14.07 in benefits, of which $3.54 was paid leave. (BLS ECEC news release)

ECEC counts paid leave as a benefit, but OEWS annual wages already pay for vacation and holiday hours. So we add only the other benefit costs: supplemental pay, insurance, retirement, and legally required costs like Social Security, Medicare, and unemployment insurance. Those came to $10.53 an hour, or about 29% of wages plus paid leave ($36.36 an hour).

The table applies that 29% to two pay figures. The benefits rows are our estimates, since ECEC reports an average across all private-industry jobs, not SDRs specifically.

Line item Payscale SDR median base BLS 41-4012 median
Annual pay (cited) $52,000 (base only) $72,080 (includes commission)
Benefits and payroll costs (estimate: 29% of pay, BLS ECEC June 2026, all private industry, excluding paid leave) ~$15,060 ~$20,880
Total compensation (estimate) ~$67,060 ~$92,960
Per month (estimate) ~$5,590 ~$7,750

On top of the Payscale column, add commission (Payscale's range is $5,000 to $28,000). Then add the costs that never show up on payroll: data and dialer tools, a CRM seat, a sales manager's time, and the months it takes a new SDR to ramp. If the SDR leaves after a year, much of that ramp cost is spent again on the next hire.

What software can take on, and what needs a person

First, a clear boundary. TeamShift's Sales worker does inbound follow-up, not cold outreach. It won't build prospect lists or send cold email sequences. If outbound prospecting is the job you're hiring for, you need an SDR or an outbound tool, and TeamShift is not that.

What TeamShift Sales does is the inbound half of the work, the part that often slips at small businesses:

  • Drafts fast first replies to inbound leads, for your OK before they go out.
  • Follows up on quotes and estimates that went quiet, drafted for your approval.
  • Cleans up the CRM, such as HubSpot, so stages and contacts match reality.
  • Drafts proposals from what it knows about the customer and the job.

Nothing goes to a customer until you approve it, and every step is recorded. (For how that approval step works, see human-in-the-loop AI.) Pricing is usage-based: a free workspace, work billed at 3x its compute cost with a maximum quoted before it starts, and daily and monthly spend caps you set (pricing).

SDR task Software can do the first pass Needs a person
First reply to an inbound lead Yes, drafted for approval Approving it, and the call that follows
Quote and estimate follow-up Yes, drafted for approval Pricing changes and negotiation
CRM hygiene and notes Yes Spot checks
Cold prospecting and list building Not with TeamShift Yes, or an outbound tool
Discovery calls and live objection handling No Yes
Reading whether a deal is real Can surface the facts Yes

For a small team where the owner or one salesperson handles every lead, the inbound follow-up is the piece most likely to slip, and it's the piece TeamShift is built for. A company that grows through outbound prospecting still needs SDRs. Software then gives them more time for conversations.

What is a typical SDR commission?

Payscale's range for SDR commission is $5,000 to $28,000 a year. Plans vary by what triggers payment, such as meetings booked, meetings held, or closed revenue.
