Social media manager salary, and what one really costs to employ

Direct answer

A typical social media manager salary in the US runs about $61,000 a year, based on Payscale's title-specific data (median base pay $61k, updated June 2026). The closest federal benchmark, public relations specialists, had a median of $74,750 ($35.94 an hour) in May 2025. For an employer, add roughly 29 cents in benefits and payroll costs for every wage dollar, which puts a full-time hire at about $79,000 to $96,000 a year in total compensation before tools and hiring costs.

Why there are two salary numbers

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track "social media manager" as its own occupation. Its Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) survey files the work under broader codes, so any BLS figure you see for this job is a proxy. We used two:

  • 27-3031 Public relations specialists. Closest to the day-to-day job: writing in the company's voice, managing how the business shows up in public, and answering people who talk back. This is our main proxy.
  • 13-1161 Market research analysts and marketing specialists. Closer if the role is mostly paid campaigns, audience data, and reporting.

Both codes include senior people in larger companies, which pulls the numbers up. That's why we also show Payscale's social media manager page, which is based on 2,595 self-reported salary profiles and was last updated June 22, 2026. Survey data like Payscale's is not a government statistic, but it does match the actual job title.

Social media manager salary by percentile

Source (reference period) 10th percentile Median 90th percentile
BLS OEWS 27-3031 PR specialists (May 2025) $44,110 ($21.21/hr) $74,750 ($35.94/hr) $135,150 ($64.98/hr)
BLS OEWS 13-1161 Marketing specialists (May 2025) $43,390 ($20.86/hr) $78,760 ($37.87/hr) $155,480 ($74.75/hr)
Payscale, Social Media Manager (June 2026) $41,000 $61,000 $88,000

BLS counted 283,380 PR specialists and 899,580 market research analysts and marketing specialists nationally in May 2025. Payscale's average base pay for the title is $60,881, with total pay (base plus bonus, commission, and profit sharing) ranging from $36,000 to $86,000.

If you're the one job hunting

The spread between the 10th and 90th percentile is wide, and a few things decide where you land.

  • Scope. Someone who plans, shoots, posts, and replies on one or two channels is paid near the lower end. Someone who also runs paid ads, owns reporting, and manages a budget is closer to the marketing-specialist numbers.
  • Title on the offer. "Social media coordinator" and "social media manager" can describe the same work at different pay. If you're doing strategy and reporting, ask for the title and band that match.
  • Proof of results. Bring numbers you can stand behind: leads from social, follower growth on a specific account, campaign spend and return. Hiring managers trust a before-and-after more than a portfolio of pretty posts.
  • Total pay, not just base. Ask about bonus, health coverage, and retirement match. Those are a big part of what the employer is paying for you, as the next section shows.

What a social media manager costs an employer

Salary is only part of the bill. The BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation (ECEC) survey for June 2026, released September 9, 2026, found that private-industry employers spent $46.89 per hour worked on total compensation: $32.82 in wages and $14.07 in benefits, of which $3.54 was paid leave. (BLS ECEC news release)

ECEC counts paid leave as a benefit, but OEWS annual wages already pay for vacation and holiday hours. So we add only the other benefit costs: supplemental pay, insurance, retirement, and legally required costs like Social Security, Medicare, and unemployment insurance. Those came to $10.53 an hour, or about 29% of wages plus paid leave ($36.36 an hour).

If you apply that 29% to the salary figures above, you get the table below. The benefits line is our estimate, not a published BLS number for this role, because the ECEC figure is an average across all private-industry jobs.

Line item Using BLS PR specialist median Using Payscale median
Median annual wage (cited) $74,750 $61,000
Benefits and payroll costs (estimate: 29% of wage, BLS ECEC June 2026, all private industry, excluding paid leave) ~$21,650 ~$17,670
Total compensation (estimate) ~$96,400 ~$78,670
Per month (estimate) ~$8,030 ~$6,560

Things this table leaves out, which you should price for your own business:

  • A scheduling tool, design software, stock footage, and a decent phone or camera. These are usually small next to salary, but they are real.
  • Ad spend, which is a separate budget no matter who runs it.
  • Hiring time and ramp-up. A new hire needs weeks to learn your products, your customers, and your voice.
  • Coverage. One person covers about 40 hours a week. Comments and messages arrive at night and on weekends too.

We could not verify a current, sourced price range for freelance or agency social media management, so we haven't given one. Freelance and agency quotes vary a lot with the number of channels, posts per week, and whether ad management is included. Get two or three written quotes against the same scope before you compare them to a hire.

What software can take on, and what still needs a person

A lot of a social media manager's week is production and repetition. That part is where software helps most.

TeamShift's Content worker drafts social posts, short videos, newsletters, listings, and website pages from what it knows about your business. It works from a live picture of your customers, jobs, and offers, so a post about a finished project can draw on the actual job. It can work in the accounts you already use, like Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Nothing gets published on its own. Every post is prepared for you to review and goes out only after you approve it. Pricing is usage-based: creating a workspace is free and work is billed at 3x its compute cost, with a maximum quoted before it starts (pricing).

Here is an honest split of the job:

Task Software can handle a first draft Needs a person
Turning a finished job, review, or offer into a post Yes, drafted for approval Final call on what goes out
Repurposing one piece into several formats Yes Taste on what's worth repurposing
Weekly reporting on what posts did Yes Deciding what to change
Replying to a heated comment or a public complaint No Yes
On-camera presence and filming real work No Yes
Brand voice, partnerships, influencer relationships Helps with research Yes
Crisis response No Yes

The judgment calls are the job. A small business that posts three times a week about real work can often get the drafting and scheduling off its plate and keep a person (often the owner, or a part-time hire) on approvals, replies, and anything on camera. A brand that lives on social, with daily community management and paid campaigns, still needs a dedicated person, and software makes that person faster rather than unnecessary.

For job seekers, that split is also a career map. Posting is getting cheaper. Strategy, community, on-camera work, and being able to show what social did for revenue are where pay holds up.

FAQ

What is the average social media manager salary?

Payscale reports an average base salary of $60,881 and a median of $61,000 for social media managers, based on profiles updated through June 22, 2026. BLS has no exact category, but its closest proxy, PR specialists, had a median of $74,750 in May 2025.

How much does a social media manager cost a business?

Adding the BLS ECEC private-industry benefit cost excluding paid leave (about 29% of wages plus paid leave, June 2026), a social media manager costs roughly $79,000 to $96,000 a year in total compensation, depending on which salary benchmark you use. Tools, ad spend, and hiring time come on top.

Why does BLS not have a social media manager category?

The OEWS survey uses the Standard Occupational Classification system, which groups social media work under broader occupations. We used public relations specialists (27-3031) as the main proxy and marketing specialists (13-1161) as a second one.

What does a social media manager make per hour?

The BLS PR specialist proxy shows a median of $35.94 an hour in May 2025, with the 10th percentile at $21.21 and the 90th at $64.98. Hourly pay for freelancers varies widely with scope.

Can AI replace a social media manager?

It can take much of the drafting, repurposing, and reporting. It should not be left to handle public complaints, on-camera content, or brand decisions. With TeamShift, posts are drafted for your approval and are published only after you say yes.
