Comparison
Best AI receptionist for small businesses: seven options compared
Direct answer
There's no single best AI receptionist. The right one depends on what you need on the call. As of October 2026, Upfirst and Dialzara are the cheapest ways to get calls answered and booked, Smith.ai is best if you want human backup on the same account, Rosie fits owners who want lots of minutes for a low flat price, Goodcall suits businesses with long calls, and My AI Front Desk bundles calls with texting and a CRM. TeamShift, which makes this page, is one of the options. It fits owners who want the call connected to a team that handles the follow-up, and it doesn't book on the call or transfer calls.
How we picked and compared
We looked at AI receptionist products that small businesses commonly shortlist, and pulled pricing and features only from each vendor's own pricing page as of October 2026. We didn't test call quality ourselves, so we don't rank voices. Plans change often. Check the vendor's page before you buy. For how AI receptionists work and what to ask before you buy, see our AI receptionist guide.
Full disclosure: TeamShift sells an AI voice agent as part of its AI team, so we compete with every product here. We've tried to say plainly where each one is the better choice.

The options in detail
Smith.ai AI receptionist
Smith.ai is best known for live human receptionists, and its AI tier sits on the same platform. Per its AI receptionist page, the free tier includes 25 calls a month and then $3.00 a call. Pro is $150 a month and Enterprise is $500, with overage of $2.00 and $1.67 a call. All tiers list bilingual English and Spanish, spam screening, warm transfers, appointment booking, and CRM integrations.
Best for: businesses that want AI on routine calls and an easy path to human receptionists on the same account. Our Smith.ai review covers the human plans.
Upfirst
Upfirst starts at $24.95 a month for 30 calls ($1.50 per extra call) and runs to $299 a month for 600 calls ($0.70 per extra). Its plans list 24/7 answering, appointment scheduling into Google, Outlook, Clio, Acuity, Calendly, and Square, call transfers, in-call texting, spam filtering, and support for 35+ languages.
Best for: solo operators and small offices that want low-cost answering with booking and transfers, and businesses serving callers in many languages.
Dialzara
Dialzara prices by the minute: $29 a month for 60 minutes ($0.48 a minute after), up to $349 a month for 1,000 minutes ($0.35 after). Plans list 24/7 answering, appointment booking, lead qualification, call routing, voicemail transcription, CRM and calendar integration, and English plus Spanish, with a 7-day trial.
Best for: businesses with short, predictable calls that want per-minute billing well below human services.
Rosie
Rosie sells minute bundles: $49 a month for 250 minutes, $149 for 1,000, and $299 for 2,000. Direct calendar booking, warm transfers, and texting during calls start on the $149 Scale plan. All plans list English and Spanish, call summaries, transcripts and recordings, and a Zapier connection. Overage pricing isn't listed on the page.
Best for: home service and local businesses that want a lot of minutes for a low flat price.
Goodcall
Goodcall is the odd one out on pricing. It charges by unique callers per month, not minutes: $79 per agent for 100 callers, $129 for 250, and $249 for 500, at $0.50 per extra caller. It says it doesn't charge for calls, minutes, or tokens, and robocalls don't count toward caller limits.
Best for: businesses whose calls run long, like detailed service intake, where per-minute billing would add up.
My AI Front Desk
My AI Front Desk (branded Frontdesk) is $99 a month, or $79 billed annually, for 200 voice minutes, with overage drawn from a credit pool at about $0.25 a minute. The same plan includes web chat, two-way texting, a built-in CRM, email drafts, and form handling, and it lists 20+ languages.
Best for: owners who want phone answering, texting, and a simple CRM from one vendor.
TeamShift
TeamShift is a hosted team of nine AI workers for small businesses, and its Support worker can answer your business line with an AI voice agent day, night, and weekends. You forward your number or use one TeamShift sets up, and TeamShift's team sets it up for your business.
What it does on a call: says it's an AI assistant at the start of every call, answers from the business brief you write (hours, services, service area, policies), and takes messages and job details. When something isn't in the brief, it says it doesn't have that and offers a callback instead of guessing. Missed and after-hours calls go to voicemail with a text alert to you. Each call has a record (outcome and notes) in TeamShift. Callers don't get lookups in your tools. Only you, after you call in and read back a code texted to your phone, can have it look things up in connected tools.
What it doesn't do: anything that changes something happens off the call. Booking or moving an appointment, a quote, a refund, a payment, or an order change becomes a request for you to approve, and the caller is told someone will confirm. It doesn't transfer calls to a person, answer in other languages, or book into your calendar mid-call. If you need any of those, the products above are better choices.
Where it differs is after the call. The same team drafts the callback text, the quote follow-up, the reminder, and the invoice chase, each for your OK. Pricing: a free workspace, with work billed by usage at 3x compute cost, a maximum quoted before it starts, and spend caps. There's no per-minute plan. See pricing and our guide to human review gates on customer calls.
Best for: owners who want calls answered and the follow-up work handled by the same team, and who are comfortable approving bookings after the call instead of on it.
How to choose the best AI receptionist for you
- Decide what must happen on the call. If callers need a confirmed slot before they hang up, pick a product that books on the call. If a quick "we'll confirm shortly" works, you have more options.
- Decide on transfers. If some calls must reach a person live, rule out products without transfers.
- Match pricing to your call pattern. Short calls favor per-minute. Long calls favor per-caller or large bundles. Pull a month of call logs first. Our answering service cost guide shows the math.
- Test with real calls. Call during a busy hour, ask something outside your brief, and try being a confused caller. Listen for whether it guesses or offers a callback.
- Plan for callers who won't talk to AI. Make sure they can leave a voicemail or ask for a callback.
A person is still better for emotional calls, complex situations, and negotiation. If those are a big share of your calls, compare against a human service in our AI receptionist vs answering service guide.
FAQ
What is the best AI receptionist for a small business?
It depends on your calls. As of October 2026, Upfirst and Dialzara are the lowest-cost options that book on the call, Smith.ai is best for AI with human backup, Rosie gives the most minutes per dollar, and Goodcall suits long calls. TeamShift fits owners who want the follow-up handled too.
How much does an AI receptionist cost?
Entry plans run from free (Smith.ai, 25 calls) and $24.95 a month (Upfirst) to $99 a month (My AI Front Desk). Higher tiers run about $250 to $500 a month.
Can an AI receptionist book appointments?
Many can. Smith.ai, Upfirst, and Dialzara list booking on all plans, and Rosie includes it from its Scale plan. TeamShift takes the appointment request on the call and confirms it after your OK.
Do callers know they're talking to AI?
That depends on the product and your settings. TeamShift says it's an AI assistant at the start of every call. Whatever you choose, give callers who don't want AI a voicemail or callback option.
Is TeamShift the best AI receptionist?
Not for everyone. If you need live transfers, multiple languages, or booking during the call, another product here is the better fit. TeamShift is strongest when you want the call and everything after it handled by the same team, with your approval on anything that changes something.
